The role
You will join the nine-person Ancient DNA and Paleogenomics group, reconstructing ancestral enzyme sequences and testing whether the resulting proteins are more stable, more active or more useful than their modern equivalents. No, we do not make dinosaurs.
What you will do
- Reconstruct ancestral protein sequences from phylogenetic and degraded-sequence data
- Design, express and characterise candidate enzymes with the protein science group
- Assess candidates against real process needs with our manufacturing science colleagues
- Publish and present externally — this group is expected to publish
- Prepare proposals for bioethics board review, which every project in this group requires
What success looks like at 12 months
You have delivered at least one characterised candidate to the process development team, submitted a manuscript, and cheerfully answered the dinosaur question roughly two hundred times.
What we require
- PhD in computational biology, evolutionary biology, protein science or a closely related field
- Experience with ancestral sequence reconstruction, phylogenetics or protein engineering
- Strong scripting ability in Python or R
- Willingness to answer the same joke about the company name, indefinitely
What we would like, but will teach you
- Wet-lab protein expression and characterisation experience
- Enzyme engineering for industrial use
- Experience with degraded or low-coverage sequence data
If you meet the required list, apply. We cap the preferred list at four items on purpose, and we would rather read an application from someone who is 70% there and hungry.
Onsite at San Diego, CA. Site-based office roles are onsite three days a week; lab, plant and quality roles are onsite by nature.
